The unique mask marking on this cute guy is certainly not hiding anything scary but rather adds to his one-of-a-kind beauty. Phantom is quite the celebrity, too. He was selected as a finalist in the Albuquerque Journal’s calendar contest and was featured in the April 2020 issue of Albuquerque the Magazine as their Pet of the Month!

Phantom came to the ranch last summer after being found wandering alone by the New Mexico Livestock Board. Since his time with us, he’s put on a healthy weight and has excelled in his training. He has been under saddle for several months using a western saddle and both a snaffle and shank bit. He can be a bit tender or sensitive with his mouth, so a light hand is best. He’s also learning to take the bit more easily. At times, he can be become nervous when unsure of himself, but he’s not exhibited any spooky tendencies. He’s very forgiving and shows no aggression. He understands direct reining and is learning neck reining, too.

Phantom gets along with the other horses and usually takes on the more passive role when paired with more aggressive or assertive horses. When out with his buddies, he’s easy to catch. Sometimes he can be stubborn when leading, though he can be coaxed out of his mood pretty easily. He has had minimal time on the trail and will need more time building his confidence outside of the arena. Phantom does well with in-hand ground work and obstacles and loads in a trailer easily. He will certainly excel at more advanced skills with consistent training.
