A native of Wyoming, Richard Holder was educated at the University of Wyoming and Yale University as an organic chemist. He did three years of national service, two as a Peace Corps Volunteer and one as a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation. He retired from UNM in 2017 after 43 years on the faculty as Professor of Chemistry. His interest in horses and their welfare is longstanding, but was rekindled in 2012 when he signed up as a volunteer ranch hand at WNCR. He became a member of the Board of Directors in 2014, and has served as President of the Board since 2015. He and his wife Bonny shelter at their East Mountain ranch two fine gelding horses, Gunner (born on WNCR) and Reno.
